During my first meetings with the artists, we will work with “assigned” themes. As I become more attuned with everyone’s abilities and interests we will be able to work on more independent pursuits.

Ceramics:
The artists will learn how to knead and roll slabs of clay. We will make square tiles with everyone getting at least two to work with. We will use objects to impress into the clay and will paint with the glazes. Each of us will explore themes individually with the end result being a group mosaic. All of the artists will be encouraged to express themselves individually but since each artist will be with a limited color palette of glazes (red, yellow, blue) the works will have a unifying visual element. Each tile will be fired, then glued to a backing material: creating a large art work made up of small art works.

Painting:
We will be working with oil pastels to create our work during the painting studios. Oil sticks will allow for the artists to make compelling work with out possessing a great deal of technical proficiency with paints and brushes. The experience will be much like drawing, but with blending and vibrant colors. When working in the E&H Painting Studio, each artist will work at an easel, making the experience more “professional”. We will also work on stretched canvas, which will make the works ready to hang without frames (although they certainly can be). The themes that we will be working with will allow the artists to make pleasant associations through color.
