House of Lazarus 2002 dimensions variable House of Lazarus is a mixed-media installation created for the Accessibility exhibition in Sumter, South Carolina in September, 2002. Responding to the name of the abandoned shop front, the artist relates the concept of resurrection to personal memory. Translucent and fragile materials are used to suggest the ephemeral nature of the past remembered. A dust painting of the artist's family rests tenuously on the surface of the former sales table. Light projected onto the shop's surviving dress mannequin casts a shadow that becomes a presence in the space. Audio recordings of family members no longer living as well as memories written on translucent paper are refer to the relationship between documentation and memory. |
