Sale 2001 dimensions variable Sale is a mixed-media installation created for the 2nd floor of the Sumter Dry Goods Building in downtown Sumter, SC. Inspired by the Dry Goods’ empty clothing racks and display shelves, this work deals with the artist’s feelings of contempt and fascination with one of the most enduring trends in women’s clothing--the white wedding gown. This work also looks at the dress as a commodity in the form of a status symbol or identity that can be purchased and then put on. Each gown has a sales tag describing the style: Princess, Angel, Virgin, etc. Each gown is reflected in a full length mirror, on which is printed text that describes the artists mixed feelings about the tradition. |
